In the Podcast I picked the Nuggets in five. Now with AK out I am going to say Nuggets in six. Not because we are better with AK out, but that now the team knows that they have to step up and play without him. I hate to do this and know that a lot of people will be pissed, but I don’t think we are playing well and will win this series. I know I know I am the pessimist, but I am not feeling it right now with this team. Partly due to the AK injury but Millsap has disappeared offensively and Korver has been a no show for the past couple of weeks and CJ continues to be consistently inconsistent. Will Fex see playing time. Will Boozer be healthy? Will All-star Deron Williams Show up.

I don’t know but will be watching every minute of it.

Utah Jazz Fans, the second best fans in the NBA…according to Bill Simmons… and an apology.

Bill Simmons speaking about the NBA crowds.

“(I tweeted that the whole situation reminded me of Chris Rock’s old joke, “I haven’t seen white people that mad since they cancelled ‘M.A.S.H.”) Only Portland fans and Utah fans can make a casual observer feel like the officials are in actual danger. That’s a good thing. In the old days, every crowd did that…

(Best NBA crowd rankings for 2009-10: 1. Portland; 2. Utah; 3. Golden State; 4. New York … then a big dropoff to the next group of cities. Biggest dropoff: Boston, a team that won 50 games but had a better road record than home record. In the defense of Boston fans, they spent the first half of the season waiting for KG to stop limping, then the second half arguing about who should charge the court, pull a Shane Stant on Rasheed and serve the mandatory prison sentence. They were distracted.)

I know “Deron Williams or Chris Paul?” is a legitimate debate

A big concession from the guy who once wrote that Williams was the Stone Temple Pilots to Paul’s Pearl Jam. But Paul’s knee injury combined with another stellar Williams season … I mean, if you were picking one of them for the next 12 years, and your life depended on it, which one would you pick? Doesn’t Williams seem like a safer bet to stay healthy and have Kidd-like longevity? Why does Paul’s missing meniscus worry me so much? (Same for you, Brandon Roy. You already had bad knees.) In February’s trade value column, I ranked Williams 10th, Derrick Rose 9th, Roy 8th and Rose 7th. Now? I think I’d go Roy 10th, then Paul, then Williams, then Rose (who’s been playing out of his mind lately). Either way, R.I.P. for the Stone Temple Pilots joke. And for Paul’s sake, let’s hope this didn’t turn into The Police (Paul) and U2 (Williams).

(Important note: If Utah makes another Conference Finals this year, the debate swings in Williams’ favor. I think it could have happened had Utah not lost the quietly rejuvenated Andrei Kirilenko down the stretch, which ended up costing them a No. 2-seed. Where does a Kirilenko injury swinging a conference finals prediction rank among the craziest things that happened this season? Above or below Kenyon Martin threatening everyone in Denver’s locker room because JR Smith’s chauffeur filled his Range Rover with buttered popcorn as an April Fool’s prank? I swear to God, man, when I find out who did this, I’m gonna put my mothaf—in’ hands on y’all! You’re right, K-Mart was higher.)

Tonight’s Game against Golden State scares the living crap out of me.

Hollinger Breaks down the NBA Western Conference race, get out your pen and paper….

Link of the Day True Hoop Henry Abbott writes an article about the changing of the guard in the Utah Jazz Ownership.

Playoff Positioning from John Hollinger

The Lakers’ decision to rest Kobe on Thursday night handed the Nuggets the inside track to the West’s No. 2 seed, but they may not have it for long. Denver must still win either at home against San Antonio or on the road against Phoenix to have a realistic shot at No. 2.

What the L.A. game really helped was the Nuggets’ quest for home-court advantage, because Denver is a game up on Utah and owns the tiebreak. The Nuggets’ magic number is now two, and while the Jazz could very well sweep their final three games (at New Orleans, at Golden State, home versus Phoenix), Denver needs only to beat Memphis at home and win one of the two games above to own the division, locking up home-court advantage and a probable No. 2 seed.

Denver’s main rival for No. 2 is Dallas, which is also a likely division winner. Even if the Mavs lose Friday in Portland, their remaining schedule (at Sacramento, at Clippers, and home against San Antonio in the season finale) gives Dallas a good shot at the second seed. San Antonio is formidable at full strength, but may be locked into the No. 7 seed by then and opt to play its scrubs.

So even though the Playoff Odds project the Mavs at 53 wins, there’s a good chance they’ll land on 54. Since Dallas wins the tiebreaks with Denver (based on a 2-1 head-to-head record) and Phoenix (based on the fact the Mavs will likely win the Southwest Division), the Mavs have a great shot at usurping the No. 2 slot from the Nuggets … especially if the Spurs help them out Wednesday.

But Dallas fans shouldn’t root too hard against the Nuggets — a three-way tie with Denver and Utah gives the Mavs the No. 2 seed, but a direct tie with Utah favors the Jazz. Thus, while the Playoff Odds project Dallas at 53 wins, there’s also a decent chance both the Mavs and Jazz land on 54, and the Nuggets can join them by winning two of their final three. Lastly, Phoenix is still in the picture for the No. 2 seed but would have to win out against a difficult schedule. In fact …

There are three big problems for the Suns right now, and when one adds them all up, Phoenix will probably open the playoffs on the road. The first problem is that Denver is probably going to win the Northwest Division instead of Utah. Phoenix can own the tiebreak with the Nuggets by beating them Tuesday, but it won’t matter if the Nuggets are division champs.

The second problem is that San Antonio might not have any reason to compete in its season finale against Dallas, because the Spurs could very well be locked into the No. 7 seed by then. That would eliminate the Suns’ slim possibility of passing Dallas, 54 wins to 53, but it could earn Phoenix home court despite technically being seeded fifth.

The Suns, of course, can get to 55 wins by sweeping their final four games, but that takes us to our last problem: their schedule. They play Friday in Oklahoma City and close the season in Utah. They need to win at least one of those games and sweep two home games against Denver and Houston to have a shot at home court.

Since the Suns will lose potential ties with Denver and Dallas because they aren’t a division champ and they are unlikely to pass either with less than 54 wins, the Suns basically need to win the season finale at Utah in order to emerge with home-court advantage. A win would give the Suns the tiebreak over the Jazz and stick Utah with another loss … which would max out Utah at 53 wins and mean Phoenix could lose two of the other three games and still earn home-court advantage.

So for the Suns, it’s basically about beating Utah (32-8 in Energy Solutions Arena) on the road. Good luck with that. Even if they sweep the other three games, it may not be enough to get them home court.

Oklahoma City suffered heartbreaking losses to Portland and San Antonio last week that, combined, will likely relegate the Thunder to the West’s No. 8 seed. Oklahoma City would need to win at Portland on Monday to have a realistic shot at sidestepping that fate because the Thunder would lose the tiebreaker to both San Antonio and Portland. A loss, however, would make it virtually impossible to catch the Blazers.

While games at Golden State and at home against Memphis should be Thunder wins, Oklahoma City hosts the Suns on Friday, putting its likely outcome at 51 wins.

The Blazers, meanwhile, host Dallas on Friday and visit the Lakers on Sunday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) before the Thunder’s Monday visit, giving Portland three straight tough opponents before a season-ender against the Warriors. The interesting dilemma is if the Lakers play Bryant on Sunday or if they decide they’d rather not see Portland in the first round of the playoffs and gift wrap a win for the Blazers. However, even if one pencils in a loss in L.A., then the Blazers would need to win the Oklahoma City game to avoid the No. 8 seed and would need to beat Dallas to have a realistic shot at No. 6.

Which takes us to San Antonio. The Spurs have two near-automatic wins (home games against Memphis and Minnesota) and one probable loss (at Denver on a back-to-back) remaining on their schedule. If it plays out that way, San Antonio would be 50-31 heading into its season finale against Dallas. If the Blazers beat Oklahoma City and Dallas but lose to the Lakers, they’ll also be at 50.

But the location of Friday’s Thunder-Suns game is important. Why?

If the Thunder win that one but lose to Portland, then the three teams are likely to be tied at 50 wins, and the Spurs would play their best payers in the season finale against Dallas. If not, however, the Thunder will be locked into No. 8 by then, and the Spurs — figuring there’s no way Portland would drop a home game to Golden State — will be content with No. 7 and punt the Dallas game.

The other wild card is if Oklahoma City wins at Portland. That would put the Blazers in a precarious spot, because they would max out at 50 wins while Oklahoma City would have at least 51. In that event, the Spurs would try very hard to win the finale in Dallas and avoid dropping to No. 8 in the West because the Blazers would hold the tiebreak.

Hollinger Break it all done.

So how do I see it playing out?

The East is the easy one, so let’s start there: I see Boston and Miami hanging on to their seeding advantages and the Bulls beating the Bosh-less Raptors on Sunday to claim the No. 8 spot. If so, our playoff matchups would look like this: No. 1 Cavs versus No. 8 Bulls; No. 2 Magic versus No. 7 Bobcats; No. 3 Celtics versus No. 6 Bucks; and No. 4 Hawks in a 2009 first-round rematch with No. 5 Heat.

In the West, I see Denver beating San Antonio and Memphis but losing to Phoenix and finishing with 54 wins; Utah winning out to also land at 54; and the Suns losing to the Jazz and to the Thunder to finish with 53, forcing them to start the first round on the road.

At the bottom half, I see Portland and Oklahoma City both finishing with 51 wins, which means San Antonio will play its A-team and beat Dallas in the season finale. Combined with a loss to Portland on Friday, that would drop the Mavs to 53 wins, while the Spurs would finish with 51.

If it plays out that way, it’s … No. 1 Lakers versus No. 8 Thunder; No. 2 Denver versus No. 7 San Antonio; No. 3 Utah versus No 6 Portland; and No. 4 Dallas versus No. 5 Phoenix.

The other outcome to consider is a Phoenix win in Oklahoma City on Friday night, which would also swing the Dallas-San Antonio season finale because it wouldn’t matter to the Spurs. In that even it’s No. 1 Lakers versus No. 8 Thunder, No. 2 Dallas versus No. 7 San Antonio, No. 3 Denver versus No. 6 Portland, and No. 4 Utah versus No. 5 Phoenix.

Of course, it will likely play out differently in the real world — there’s going to be at least one surprise in there somewhere — and that’s the fun of it. This is a road map, but I’m sure some of the street names will change between now and Wednesday night.

The Best Basketball Game I have ever seen…B.K. agrees

Picture 13On Sunday night I predicted the Utah Jazz to lose during our weekly podcast win loss segment. On Tuesday at about 4 o’clock I got 4-5 phone calls asking me how I felt about the game that night. I replied ” I think we lose the Thunder are a really good team”. The Utah Jazz did not close out one quarter well last night including the fourth, in a game that went down to the wire. I realize that this game will forever be remembered as the “Durant Foul” game by many and maybe the “Payback Game” by others. I don’t care if it was a foul or not, the ref didn’t call it and it goes into the win column for the Utah Jazz and a loss for the TTTSNBN.

After thinking about the hundreds of basketball games that I have been to and the 1000’s yes 1000’s that I have watched on T.V., including the playoffs in my short 31 years of life, this is the best. Last night was the best start to finish basketball game I have ever seen. Period. As I went through the catalog of games that have made an impression on my mind I couldn’t think of any other game that equaled this game. The Jordan triple overtime game, the front row Spurs game, the Cavs comeback, the Denver Front Row/Deron sends us to overtime game, The 25 point comeback against Portland, The Playoffs for the past 5 years, Even the John Stockton “Shot” game takes a back seat to this game. Let me reiterate game as opposed to moment. Last night was the best start to finish game I have ever seen.

Deron Williams and Kevin Durant put on one hell of a show.

Deron and Durrant shot chart for the game.

Deron and Durant shot chart for the game.

Durant didn’t hit a shot in overtime and only had three buckets in the paint for the entire game.  A back door alleyoop on a semi fast break, a tip in, and a baseline dunk early in the game. To say that the Jazz played good defense on Durant and gave up 45 is funny but truly I think they did. Look at his shot chart, almost all of his shots were outside of the paint and 13 of the 29 shots were from behind the arc.

Deron Williams has finally and should from this point on among everyone be known as “the” best point guard in the N.B.A. He has been in my eyes for quite some time, but last night he nutted up a performance that if the Jazz can close out the second spot in the West should put him on the All-NBA first team this year.

As great as a game as Deron had, He had some huge help from his teammates.

Picture 8
Carlos Boozer had two points in the first quarter seven in the second and Cj Miles had no points in the first half. As bad as the two of them played offensively in the first half the second half was ridiculous. Boozer and CJ combined for 35 points in the second half.

Memo had a huge first half and a rather dissapointing second half, but the other guys stepped up to take some of the slack.

Two guys that didn’t step up last night were Korver and Sefalosha They combined for 47 minutes and no points. I know its not all about points but those guys are counted on to get anywhere from 5-15 points a game in this situation and to come up with empty is not common.

Millsap played huge of the bench and once again didn’t get calls on one end and got a ton of calls on the other end. I let you decide which end he got the calls on.

I hate to do this but every time Matthews makes a shot from beyond 15 feet I can’t help but thank all the other teams that didn’t pick this guy up and that Brewer is not shooting them. Wesley Matthews has and continues to show is uncanny way to hit big shots when we need them. Fourteen points from an undrafted rookie is amazing but even more amazing is when those fourteen points come. A Huge three in overtime, A Huge three to take back the lead midway through the third.

Here are Brendan’s thoughts from last night.

After the last 3 Jazz games I attended ended in Jazz victories, that were decided by halftime. I was a little hesitant to commit to heading up to the game with Spencer.  Don’t get me wrong I love seeing the Jazz play live its just hard to shake off the effects of 3 games mainly spent playing Bubble Breaker on my phone as the all star D-LEAGUE lineup of Yada, Big Fes and The Kouf see significant playing time in the 3rd quarter.  With that being said I hesitated for all of a second before jumping in the car with Spencer heading up to what was going to be arguably the best game the NBA has seen this year.

It started off average enough.  The Jazz were able to build a decent lead.  Mathews and CJ seemed to have Durant under control and Memo was actually hitting 3’s.  The Jazz were cruising to a big win.  Then OKC came alive.  They couldn’t miss a mid range jumper from anywhere.  The Jazz had a few turnovers and just like that OKC had the lead going in to half time.  If you attend Jazz games at least a few times a year you know the usual halftime routine.  You take an inventory of the game and decide what needs to happen for a Jazz win.  There was the obvious, CJ needed to score (zero at halftime) and Booze needed to become a factor after a very slow start and Deron just needed to keep doing what he was doing.  By the way the halftime dancers were awful so that gave us extra time for speculation.  Spencer came up with this gem “First team to 90 wins”.
The second half of basketball was one of the best I have ever seen played and was strangely a lot like the Cleveland game earlier in the season.  The Jazz built a solid lead late in the fourth and it looked like they finally put this team down.  As Jazz fans we have learned though that any team with a player with James,Bryant, Wade or Durant on the back of their jersey is never out of it until the clock reads all zeros.  Durant began to rattle off threes like they were layups and they weren’t just normal toe near the line threes.  These were five feet plus back from the line with solid defense, but he still hits nothing but net threes.  I think one of LeBron’s shots during the Cleveland miracle was from near the same spot.  This is the point in the game where you start to get a sick feeling in your stomach and imagine what the ride home will be like.  With the game tied Deron missed a jumped that 9 out of 10 times will go down and the Thunder had time for one last shot.  I cant express to you how on fire Durant was at this point.  They had time for a desperation prayer and I had no doubt in my mind if he KD got the ball in his hands he was going to hit the game winner.  Durant got the ball near half court turned and fire…… and almost nailed it. The ball bounced off the back of the rim and we were headed to overtime.
The mood began to lift because overtime usually favors the home team.  This was no usual over time game though.  Durant had brought his team back from the brink and showed no signs of slowing down.  In the overtime period the Jazz were very nearly put away after trailing by 3 if not for a brilliant and one from CJ that brought us back to even.  If we had not gotten any points out of that possession I believe it would have been game over.  Even with all this the Thunder still retook the lead off of a phantom foul on Durant by C.J. (this will be important) and a Layup by Green.  With 5 seconds remaining, the the Jazz down by one, it was obvious to everyone who was going to be called on by coach Sloan.  Deron fired the exact shot that he missed for the win in regulation but this time it hit nothing but net.  The crowd at the ESA erupted in celebration even though there was still 1.1 seconds left on the clock.  Again everyone in the building knew who would be taking the last shot for OKC.  Durant created some separation from CJ caught the ball and fired as CJ closed the gap.  The ball fell well short of the rim and the celebration was on.
Seeing the replay later CJ did get Durant on the arm on what should have been a foul.  Karma is a …. well you know what I mean if you watched the New Years Eve game against OKC.  Its to bad that ESPN chose to highlight the final no call (after getting several phantom calls throughout the game).  Anyone who only watches highlights wont see how amazing a game this was.  D Will’s career scoring night, the Boozer stare down dunk,  The Durant threes are just the tip of the Iceberg that was this game.  If this is the regular season, I cant even imagine what the playoffs will be like.  Go Jazz
